A new policy, coming into effect
from 12th November,
is set make the transfer of domain names from one registrar
to another easier.
ICANN, the body responsible for the internet's
domain naming system will be implementing a new Inter-Registrar
Transfer Policy which allows a domain name holder to
request a transfer from the registrar to which he wishes
to transfer his domain.
That registrar, known as the Gaining Registrar, will then
issue a standard form on which the holder must confirm the
request if the transfer is to go ahead. The Losing Registrar
may also seek confirmation on a separate form.
Registrars are entitled to refuse the transfer, but only
for a set number of reasons, such as fraud, court order
or in the event of a dispute action over ownership of the
domain name. In addition, transfers may not take place for
60 days after the holder first registers the domain, or
within 60 days after an earlier transfer.
The policy also includes a dispute resolution mechanism
for violations occurring on or after 12th November, and
a means by which transfers can be 'undone' – where,
for example, the transfer has been made in error.
The new process, by putting the transfer process into the
hands of the client and the registrar to which the domain
is moving to, should prevent holdups and delays often incurred
when companies fail to allow or accept transfers away from
themselves due to bad administration or just sheer awkwardness. |

Some of Studio 2's clients have
reported over the past few months that they have received
emails from bogus domain renewal companies, who use publicly
available registry information to contact domain owners.
They con you into thinking that your domain
is up for renewal, and that you should renew it at once
to stop people from nabbing it!
Another approach is for them to claim that another company
is trying to register a domain name very similar to your
own: perhaps www.studio2online.ltd.uk for example. This
can often panic you into registering this with them, to
stop the possibility of losing business to a company pretending
to be you. (You can in actual fact only register this
.ltd URL if you have a company in this name.)
With both cases, what is actually happening is you are
simply transferring your domain over to themselves, charging
you a high price at the same time, naturally. One company
known to be doing this is called the 'Domain Registry
of US'.
